The collection contains correspondence, deeds, Flanner's military service materials, and booklets. The correspondence mainly concerns the Henry Beeson family in Uniontown, Pa., and Mount Pleasant, Ohio. Richard Beeson is a frequent correspondent. Also included is botanical correspondence between Flanner and Dr. William Darlington; materials concerning Flanner's military service with the 113th Ohio regiment and his wife's attempts to collect his back pay; correspondence from Indianapolis of Orpha Annette Flanner; two booklets on Dr. William Darlington by Dr. Dorothy Lansing; and an oversized letter from Henry Beeson about dissipated residents of Mount Pleasant, Ohio and Uniontown, Pa.

Flanner was the son of Quaker clergyman William Flanner. A botanist and teacher, he carried on a botanical correspondence with Dr. William Darlington, a physician of West Chester, Pa. In 1843 Flanner married Orpha Annette Tyler. He served as a substitute in the Civil War, was wounded, and died. His widow, living in Mount Pleasant, Ohio, moved to Indianapolis with her children.
